What do I do in a pediatric dental emergency?

When a pediatric dental emergency arises unexpectedly, The Smile Academy team is here to help. Injuries to the face, mouth and teeth are common among children. Assess whether your child’s injury caused vomiting or loss of consciousness – even for a short time. If so, contact your child’s physician immediately. Head injuries take priority over mouth and tooth concerns.

We promise to always work you into our schedule when an emergency strikes during office hours. If you experience an emergency after hours, call our office number to be directed to the on-call pediatric dentist.

Why should I see a pediatric dentist?

We are experts in your child’s oral health. Similar to the pediatricians for health care, pediatric dentists complete two to three years of specialty training in children’s teeth after dental school.

When should my child first see a pediatric dentist?

We recommend you bring your child in after the first tooth erupts, or no later than your child’s first birthday, in order to prevent dental problems.

What should I do if my child complains of a toothache?

First, try rinsing the irritated area with warm salt water and give your child acetaminophen. If the face is swollen, place a cold compress near the painful area. Then, schedule an appointment with us as soon as possible.

How often does my child need to see the dentist?

After the first tooth erupts, you should schedule a dental appointment for your child every six months. Learning to brush, floss and eat a health diet helps ensure your child has a lifetime of good dental habits.

What can I feed my child to promote good oral health?

Provide your child with a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, bread, dairy and meat. Do your best to limit sugars and starches.
